Abstract
Quality of life of families with special needs (sn) has raised some concerns because it affects directly the parental practices and, ultimately, the quality of life of the child. In this context this study sought to examine the quality of life of parents of children with ne, and it’s determinants.Participated in the study 206 adults of the North of the country, into two groups: with and without children with SN. By applying two instruments:the Quality of Life Questionnaire for Families (Hoffman, Marquis, Poston,Summers e Turnbull, 2006) and the survey questionnaire in emotionaldevelopment to adults – short version (Bisquerra e Pérez, 2007), we perceived differences in quality of life by gender, higher among women, and according to children disability. Was also found a strong difference in the quality of life between families with and without sn, and high sizeeffect. No relationships were found with age, parental education and children with special needs, or differences due to marital status or frequency of specific training in ne. Finally, there was a strong positive relationship between quality of life and emotional competencies, which may provide clues for future interventions. The data are discussed and some suggestions for research and intervention are presented.
