Abstract
Guerra Junqueiro (1850-1923) occupies a prominent place in the expressive and symptomatic visibility of the Portuguese anticlerical phenomenon, his anticlericalism having a particularly violent expression in A Velhice do Padre Eterno (1885), with a manifest extension in Pátria (1896), having both works pointed out as “the gospel of anticlericalism in Portugal”. However, the visibility of Junqueira's anticlericalism precedes that first work in many years. Hence, the present article is concerned with the roots of Junqueiro's anticlericalism. To this end, crossing arguments and “demolished the previous acquired”, he particularly pursues the poetical composition “O Cura da minha aldeia”, not yet properly recorded and inscribed in Obras de Guerra Junqueiro (Poetry).
