(Re)criar o património: caraterização de problemáticas e tendências para a programação de residências artísticas em Portugal

Abstract

The programming of residencies, as a model for enabling artistic creation and experimentation, is a growing phenomenon at an international level. In an (apparently) generalized trend, heritage is being chosen as a motif for study and/or valorisation, although often dealing with objects or practices not officially classified. Not being aware of any systematic survey on current programming practices, with this particular focus, in Portugal, this study aimed to map, analyse and problematize these experiences, in order to propose a program that, not only reflects the research previously conducted, but also envisions possibilities for change. Inspiring the empirical component of the research, this thesis establishes its theoretical/conceptual horizon at the intersection between (Critical) Heritage Studies and Artistic Studies. The thesis is organized into three main components, in response to the previously stated objectives. The first part of the thesis presents an interdisciplinary approach, evoking perspectives and methodologies from various domains, such as Art History, Sociology, Anthropology, or Educational Sciences. Practices based on ethnography, eco-museology, and other arts-based research experiments, are also considered for mobilizing emancipated processes of knowledge production about, and around, heritage. Furthermore, a genealogy of the phenomenon of artistic residency programming is presented, within the scope of an historical and mutually implicated relationship between Art and Heritage. Finally, both challenges and opportunities, applicable to the design, management, documentation and evaluation of artistic projects, are identified, exploring issues around the use of "community" and "participation". The results of a survey on a sample of 58 Portuguese artist residency programs (2004-2020) are presented, in the second part of the thesis. This study combines a descriptive approach, with observations from the fieldwork conducted at the residencies, semi-structured interviews and qualitative analysis, allowing us to look at each case individually, but also at the collective views from two of the main actors in this phenomenon: promoters/curators and artists. The last part of the thesis corresponds to the proposal for an artistic residency program, namely a pilot action, designed for a specific territory, local heritage and population. More than seeking to understand a relevant cultural phenomenon, this work proposes to reflect upon how artistic creation can enhance new ways of understanding or making heritage, that is, of (re)creating heritage.
