Abstract
Due to a set of problems facing European public social security systems, namely Portugal, as a result of the impact of unfavorable demographic developments, the economy and the emergence of new social problems and issues, the need to relieve the pressure exerted on public social security systems, particularly in the field of pensions, and it is expected that the development of complementary social protection schemes may constitute a fundamental instrument to be considered in guaranteeing and reinforcing levels of social protection.
