Abstract

For centuries, Portugal has been a country of emigration, and has witnessed much of its population migrate into other countries. This reality, since the 70s, was somewhat altered, with the addition of many immigrants, especially of Portuguese speaking countries. This phenomenon has increased significantly since the accession of Portugal to the European Community. From a country of emigration, Portugal has become, in recent years, a country of immigration, with migratory flows that come mainly from the PALOP. In parallel to this phenomenon, another has come to occupy a significant expression in Portugal, and in particular the entry of young people from PALOP looking for a more solid formation in Portuguese universities. Despite the cultural and historical links between these countries, the inclusion of these students in Portuguese universities has been a slow and complex phenomenon. If on the one hand, there is a gradual expansion of cultural heterogenization and accessing public university education, on the other hand, the Portuguese society still has contradictory attitudes towards immigration in general, and, in particular, towards the one that comes from the PALOP, in so far as it continues to present prejudices and discriminatory attitudes against immigrants, postures that consequently settle also in the academic environment. From the perspective of the problems that arise from the inclusion of these students at the universities, it is our purpose to measure and analyze the type of academic integration that universities in Braga's district practice among students from the PALOP.
