Abstract

The Ducal Palace of Vila Viçosa houses a collection of portraits of the Dukes of Braganza executed in two phases, the first in the 18th century and the second in the early 20th century. The second phase seven portraits, commissioned to some of the most important painters of the late 19 th century such as José Malhoa, Veloso Salga- do and Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, are studied for the first time. This work aims to study the paintings by imaging techniques such as reflectography and infrared photography to study the underdrawing. The study of these portraits contributes to the characterisation of the artistic technique of these painters and to the know- ledge of this important artistic period, yet still insufficiently scientifically studied.
