Abstract
In the last four decades, several measures have been introduced in the Portuguese educational system, traditionally centralized, with a view to curricular diversification and pedagogical differentiation, and which presuppose the recognition of margins of school autonomy. This article describes the project of autonomy and curricular flexibility initiated in a set of schools in the academic year 2017-2018, points out continuities and ruptures with previous measures and highlights the main challenges facing this public policy action aimed at the core of school culture.
