Abstract

In this paper we propose an encryption algorithm for protecting the confidentiality and integrity of MPEG2 bitstreams. The encryption is performed with DES to obtain high performance and small overheads. Several levels of security are presented which make use of selective data encryption. Security and key management issues are discussed. Keywords: MPEG 2, encryption, DES. 1. INTRODUCTION Nowadays, more than ever, the World is deeply dependent on communication and important needs arise for protecting it. For centuries, cryptography has been providing the means to ensure secrecy in communications. Developments in this field allowed the widespread of cryptography to every domain in information exchange. Since more than 70% of human communication is visual, protecting image and video has become a matter of great concern. Our work has been centered in the protection of the content of video sequences based on the MPEG2 standard, using encryption techniques, as will be described
