Abstract

Psychological safety is a key factor in the learning and performance of teams (Edmondson & Lei, 2014; Duhigg, 2016). Schools are organisations extensively team-based. The learning behaviours in teams are crucial to their performance. In this domain, research is scarce in school organizations. We tested a model in which team-learning behaviours (Savelsberg,van der Heijden & Poell, 2009; Dimas, Alves, Lourenço & Rebelo, 2016) are explained by their psychological safety (Edmondson, 1999) through the mediating effect of cultural orientation to group learning (Rebelo & Gomes, 2011), with the effect of psychological safety on cultural orientation to group learning is moderated by the strength of the climate of psychological safety (Koopmann et al., 2016). We surveyed 299 individuals, from 47 teams/groups, from two school clusters in the Porto metropolitan area. We verified by linear regression that team learning behaviours team learning behaviours are explained by psychological security through the mediating mediating effect of cultural orientation to group learning when  teams have a strong psychological safety climate. The results corroborate studies in other countries. The results corroborate studies in non-school-based organisations and recommends that further explore the antecedents of psychological safety in school organizations.
