Abstract

This book presents a narrative of a social and cultural trajectory geographically situated in the British Isles, where England polarizes most of the events that will be relevant to the analysis. We tried to bring together descriptive elements that put events within social, political, economic and cultural contexts, and at the same time interpret those events from different angles. Each chapter will therefore be supported by a number of theoretical positions that stress the plurality of perspectives in cultural analysis, as well as the diversity of cultural expressions in the British Isles in a time span from the Middle Ages to the second decade f the 21st century. The problematization of the British identities in the Modern and Postmodern periods forms the main subject of analysis in the body of this book, published in 1996. A last part was added, dealing with the years from 1995 to 2020 and the implementation of Brexit. The readers should learn to read and interpret the main lines of change that took place towards the end of the 20th century into the first two decades of the 21st, at the level of the reconfiguration of the social structures, the growing importance and visibility of a multicultural society, and the processes of recognition or rejection of the new social conditions. At the same time we will examine the main theoretical positions that question the British cultural and social formations in the past three decades
