Abstract
Statistical methods, such as regression models and factorial analysis of principal
components are applied to the study of portuguese soccer championship results.
Two models are developed, using, as dependent variable, the results of soccer
games and as independent variables, available statistical data for the behavior of
the intervening teams. After outliers elimination and validation of the regression
models assumptions, the estimation of results for the soccer games and 95%
confidence intervals are calculated, which originate classification predictions by the models that are compared with the observed values.
