Abstract

Appointed as Bishop of Porto in 1899, D. António Barroso became the pastor of a Church living in the political, social and ecclesiastical context of the 19th century-Liberal Portugal. This communication introduces the main features of this Church, by focusing on the last three decades of the 19th century, during the episcopate of D. Américo Ferreira do Santos Silva (1871-1899), predecessor of D. António Barroso. However, this chronological range is not a rigid limit, because the present study also collects and conveys previous data to frame these historical problems. This communication will study the Portucalense Church through the profile of its bishops; within the diocesan geography reconfigured in 1882; by the action of its
pastoral agents, in particular the diocesan clergy and the religious, and the dynamics of the Apostolate of the Laity, a very striking and pioneering process in 19th-century Porto.
