Abstract
The main goal of this paper is to draw a picture of the trajectory and performance of the press in São Tomé and Príncipe throughout the colonial period. The roles played by journalism are analyzed in the light of the political regimes and social-economic environment of the archipelago between 1857 and 1974. With the goal of understanding the evolution of the press and its interdependence with the political context, the study uses the theories of journalism and press system in liberal and authoritarian regimes. The research explored both primary and secondary sources and summarizes the legacy of colonial press.
