Abstract
This article deals with the double biblical worldview about poverty: as a social context one is not responsible for, or as a state of mind which enhances brotherhood and fraternity. Both of them criticize the worldview that looks upon poverty as a punishment or as fate impossible to be changed. The biblical vocabulary on this subject offers a broad perspective from these worldviews throughout Israel’s history, where the prophets and wisdom literature assumed an acute critique of all those who oppress the poor in various ways.
