Abstract

The Hospital de Alienados do Conde de Ferreira was inaugurated in Oporto on March 24th, 1883, by a testamentary indication of Joaquim Ferreira dos Santos. This hospital was the first psychiatric hospital to be built from scratch in Portugal, being at the forefront of the assistance to the alienated, and benefited from the physician António Maria de Sena as clinical director. The aim of this paper is to present three clinical cases of alienated women who were admitted voluntarily at the Hospital de Alienados do Conde de Ferreira, at its inauguration. These cases are three stories and three memories: Júlia Rosa, seventeen years old, married and also a prostitute; Rosa Corrêa, fifty-two years old, widow and born in Régua; and Francisca Thereza de Jesus, forty-two years old, single and that worked as a servant. They were three clinical cases with different characteristics, although all of them presented similar symptoms of delirium, common to some alienated admitted by that the time at the Hospital.
