Abstract

The aim of this work is to present a recently published monograph on the figure of the archbishop of Braga and antipope Maurice “Bourdin”, entitled Mauricius Bracarensis archiepiscopus, quae est civitas Hispaniae: le fonti narrative europee sull’arcivescovo di Braga e antipapa Gregorio VIII Maurizio «Burdino» (secoli XII-XIII) (Porto: CITCEM, 2021). The career of this peculiar ecclesiastic allows to look at some of the most important problems of Medieval Europe between the eleventh and the twelfth centuries through a comparative and international perspective. Regarded as a marginal character, numerous literary sources of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries depict instead a complex figure, who was able to build his own position in the ecclesiastical and political context of the time.
