Abstract

A syndrome of fluent aphasia with alexia, agraphia, acalculia, right-left disorientation, and finger agnosia appeared after acute meningitis with unusually prolonged coma in a healthy, normal, 17 year old boy with a history of poor spelling. The syndrome lasted about two weeks and then cleared. The onset and transiency of such a distinctive clinical picture after generalized insult of the central nervous system and the role of the previous history of dysgraphia are discussed in the light of current views on the neurologic basis of cognitive and linguistic activity.
