Abstract

Introduction: According to the World Health Organization, Palliative Care integrates, among others, the psychological and spiritual aspects of the patient in care. In recent years, spirituality has been recognized by researchers, physicians, patients, and families as an important resource to cope with the stress that accompanies terminal illnesses and the process of dying, constituting a protective resource against end-of-life suffering. In this respect, within the Sociedad Española de Cuidados Paliativos the Grupo de Espiritualidad (GES) workgroup was created to further advance the knowledge of this dimension, rigorously exploring and enabling its accompaniment in patients whose life is coming to an end. Aim: The purpose of this work was to translate, validate, and culturally adapt the Cuestinario GES to the Portuguese (Portugal) language. Materials and Methods: Methodological study comprising a sample of 71 palliative care patients, following a quantitative approach regarding the type of data analysis. Results: The psychometric properties of this instrument indicate that the scale has low fidelity for the target population (Cronbach’s alpha value of 0.645). Three dimensions (intrapersonal, interpersonal, and transpersonal) were found in the validation process of the instrument, and it was decided to maintain the structure of the original instrument of 8 items. Conclusion: The Portuguese version of the Cuestinario GES is valid and psychometrically suitable to assess the resources and spiritual needs and to facilitate the intervention in palliative care patients. However, it is suggested the application of the instrument in larger samples, which will allow the consolidation of its validation in further studies.
