Trauma sensitive care in residential homes for children and youths: characterization of needs

Abstract

This presentation will describe the perspective of 85 residential care workers from 14 residential homes, considering the critical areas for trauma sensitive care in welfare system, through the lens of Trauma Sensitive Care Evaluation Questionnaire (TSCEQ). The results show fragilities in the dimensions such support and staff self- care and the adequate training to deal with the complex demands of children and youth in residential care units. Questionnaire´ open questions reveals obstacles to trauma sensitive care and actions need to prompt change: professional training, supervision, and individual support; referral to specialized services; improve professional communication and teamwork and improve child-careers relationship.
