title = "UK dithering over Brexit: on the European single market and its regulatory model",
abstract = "Having voted for and triggered Brexit, the UK has found it difficult to leave the EU. This chapter discusses why Brexit posed a dilemma for the UK in light of the benefits associated with the European single market cum regulation, and pinpoints the sources of its ambivalence and the stark choices facing the country upon Brexit. It examines the state of the internal market and the possibility of a truly single market in terms of market opening, regulation, and the institutional environment (including structural reform), as well as the single market as the EU{\textquoteright}s vehicle for (quality) growth and its governance. It discusses what the UK gave up by having given preference to (regaining) sovereignty, from the point of view of the internal market{\textquoteright}s status quo but also the possibility of creating a truly single market (after all, the single market is a work in progress), and considering what the UK could or might have wanted to do in response.",
