Abstract

Current knowledge of 16th century Portuguese silverware has crucial gaps in terms of material and technical aspects. To help fill these gaps, a gilded silver chalice dating from the first quarter of the 16th century was subjected to rigorous analysis, for the first time. This liturgical vessel currently belongs to the collection of the Museu Nacional Frei Manuel do Cenáculo in Évora (Portugal) but originally came from the nearby Ermida de São Brás de Évora. The goldsmith who made it is unknown. Through examination and analysis methods, such as digital microscopy and X-ray fluorescence, it was possible to obtain unknown information about the technological characteristics of this chalice, namely its material composition and production techniques. The aim of this article is to present the preliminary results of the analytical study carried out, understanding its material and technical characteristics and relating them to the dynamics of chalice production in Portugal in the first half of the 16th century.
