Abstract

In the Kitāb al-Tawārīhcombining breve below by Abū Šākir b. al-Rāhib, a Melkite computus is attributed to Sa'īd b. Batcombining dot belowrīq, the Patriarch of Alexandria named Eutychius (933-940). As in the case of his contemporary Ibn Abī Usaybi'a, the Coptic author of the 13th century found this 'second treatise' annexed to the celebrated Annals, which he quoted largely in his own work on astronomy, calendaristics and world chronography. Whereas a few MSS transmitting the writing of the patriarch refer to this data in some 'artificial introductions' but without giving the corresponding text, the author of the Dcombining macron belowayl or Continuation of this chronicle, Yahcombining dot belowyā b. Sa'īd al-Antcombining dot belowākī (11th cent.), appears as the potential author of this Paschal Reckoning, in fact announced in his own chronicle. This Hcombining dot belowisāb builds the main subject of Ch. 30-31 of the K. al-Tawārīhcombining breve below on the Passover and the preceding Lent time. It is also mentioned in two other chapters on the solar cycle and the dating of Christmas and on the bissextile years. Overall, eight chapters are literally quoted or discussed, including a Ch. 25 (!) After exposing the incidents of the transmission of our text, which was considered virtual or lost, we give a full transcription of the extracts quoted in the historical work of the great Coptic encyclopaedist Ibn al-Rahib, which is now in the process of being edited.
