Abstract

The microbiology of caries has been studied for a long time and it is widely accepted that Streptococci and Lactobacilli are the culprits lowering the pH leading to caries. However, molecular microbial identification studies have shown that the complexity of the oral microbiome is enormous and finer analysis reveals that there are other species involved. Our hypothesis is that molecular approaches might reveal different genera/species associated with caries.
