Abstract

In recent years, the importance of the Portuguese language has considerably increased in Macau. As a result, there has been a rapid increase in the number of private secondary schools offering courses of Portuguese as a foreign language. Despite that, many of these institutions are still at the beginning of their development, and there are still many opportunities to teach the target language in an efficient and innovative manner. With a view to implementing the promotion and dissemination of the Portuguese language in Macau, it is necessary to examine how Portuguese is currently taught in order to search for teaching methods that are appropriate and attractive to students at secondary schools.It is known that communication is one of the Chinese students´ biggest weaknesses in foreign language acquisition. Moreover, Macau is a city where there are not many opportunities to speak Portuguese. This report aims to contribute to the discussion on how to improve the new generation’s communication skills through the articulation of the Communicative Approach with other teaching methods.
