One of the least understood elements in expanding a business abroad is the influence politics may have on any given company. There are several risks emanating from the political realm that can be both analysed and predicted. The scientific study of these political risks is therefore important but existing research in Portugal is severely lacking. Moreover, there is no single book in Portuguese focusing on explaining, in reasonable detail, how to identify, understand and face political risks. As such, the present thesis aims, firstly, to contribute to the development of political risk analysis scientific area in Portugal. Another goal of this work is to help Portuguese companies understand the different types of political risks they may have to face throughout their expansion and, consequently, know and use the market’s best practices on political risk analysis and management. As such, besides reviewing and structuring the existent knowledge on the subject, it was researched, through questionnaires, how Portuguese companies with business abroad deal with political risks and which specific risks they considered particularly relevant. The thesis ends as the conclusions reached are summed up. There is no single correct way to analyse political risks, as the analysis must be adapted to the project and the organisation. Such an analysis must be structured and systematic so that they are scientifically valid and, thus, have analytical and predictive value. Finally, several recommendations are made regarding future research in the field of political risk analysis, including a more thorough questionnaire done to more companies and how social networking may contribute to political risks.
