Abstract

Nowadays we live in a frantic society, which demands increasing preoccupations for both students and educators. In this way, it is significant to study the anxiety phenomenon and how it can benefit or hinder the students’ well-being and performance. It was from this point that the present study developed. The aim was to measure the intrinsic anxiety (trait-anxiety) in young viola students and the possible modification on a public performance moment (state-anxiety), as well as to find the consequences on the public performance quality. Data derived from the standardized test State-Trait Anxiety Inventory – STAI (Spielberger, 1983) translated to Portuguese by Danilo R. Silva (2005) and applied to a group of 26 viola students from two music schools: Escola Profissional e Artística do Vale do Ave and Escola Profissional de Música de Viana do Castelo. The results indicated significant differences between the factors trait-anxiety and state-anxiety, as well as significant differences between those factors in the female participants, when individually considered. The results also showed a significant correlation between anxiety and level of performance. That is, the higher the state-anxiety levels were, the lower the performance marks. Therefore, young music students do feel pre-performance anxiety and their state-anxiety levels can drastically modify in stress or threat situation, leading to a negative effect on the performance level.
