Abstract

The present report is about the importance of the role of a press office has in the production of news in the technological sector of the Portuguese journalism. Having this in mind, the theoretical framework of the investigation approaches areas of interest for the report, among them public relations as a general concept to the communication phenomenon, press office as a vital tool and a sub-concept of public relations, the current paradigm of news production and the importance of the information source in the process. In order to find an answer to the starting question "What is the importance of the press office in the production of news in the technological sector?", a qualitative analysis is applied that allows to expose little known social processes around particular groups and helps in the construction of new approaches, according to Minayo (2010). For data collection, six interviews were conducted with press advisors who worked or work clients in the technology area and six interviews with journalists who work specifically in the technology cluster.As a consequence of the research, it is notorious the importance that press officers assume in technological journalism, namely in their ability to produce or promote content with high news value as press releases, something very valued in the field of technological journalism due to the lack of journalists who are exclusively in the cluster. Additionally, the press officer is still relevant because it is one of the main sources of information that exist and because it brings journalists and their media closer to brands or companies, although it does not mean that they are the most used source.
