In recent years, innovation and creativity have been the driving forces behind a new model of economy that has impacted many cultural sectors and created so many others. Concepts of Cultural Industry, Creative Economy and Creative Cities are related through creativity, innovation and social, cultural and economic transformations. This dissertation aims to answer two questions: the first, to characterize what a creative city is; the second is to understand the impacts and benefits that the title “Creative City” can bring to the region. To achieve this goal and profile the creative city, a conceptual review of theorists and concepts is made to support the proposed case study. The case study addresses two candidate cities to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, with design as a reference: Curitiba-Brazil (with application process completed) and Matosinhos-Portugal (with application process not submitted but conducting a relevant activity in the field of design). As an exploratory case study, a qualitative characterization of the application processes was made, agents were consulted, leaving a work base that can support future research.
