Abstract

This research intends to demonstrate similarities, references and «ecos» from the Jewish celebration of Day of Atonement, Yôm Kippur, which are present in The Epistle to the Hebrews. With this goal, the work is organized in four chapters. In the first we will approach the multiple celebrative dimensions in Judaism, looking to find the points of contact with the correspondent festivities, especially Yôm Kippur. The second chapter will be a full in-depth analysis of the main normative text in Yôm Kippur, Leviticus 16, but will also find some dispositions present in other sacred texts of smaller importance, all attributed to priestly tradition P. In third chapter we will observe texts from ancient Jewish literature, in particular the treaty Yomá from Mishná, as well as The Temple Scroll from Qumrãn, and other texts from Philo of Alexandria and Flavius Josephus referring to Yôm Kippur. In the fourth chapter we will analyze The Epistle to the Hebrews to demonstrate how in this text the intrinsic aspects from the ritual of Day Atonement are related to the salvific mission of Christ; the author of Epistle works in a straight analogy between the sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifices in the Old Testament, which intend to achieve forgiveness from sins, especially the ones carried out in the celebration of Yôm Kippur.
