A comunicação como pilar do cuidado à pessoa em situação crítica

Abstract

This Internship Report was prepared within the scope of the 17th edition of the Master's Degree in Nursing, specializing in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the field of Nursing for the Critically Ill Person, at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. The internship took place in an Intensive Care Unit in the northern region and in an out-of-hospital emergency setting, also in the northern region, reflecting on the development of both common and specific competencies of the specialist nurse. Communication proved to be a central element in the care delivery process, both in interaction with the team and in supporting the family of the Critically Ill Person. The ability to convey information clearly and empathetically was shown to be essential in reducing family anxiety, strengthening trust in the team, and ensuring a humanized approach to patient care. Furthermore, throughout the internship, complementary activities were carried out to enrich practical training. Among these, the Trauma Green Path stands out, which involved bibliographic research on best practices in this field, as well as training on the ISBAR methodology (Identification, Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation) for INEM, focusing on improving communication and effectiveness in the quality of care provided in emergency situations. A literature review on communication was also conducted, emphasizing its importance in interactions with both the team and family members, as well as its application in the intensive care context. This report highlights the importance of communication, effective management, and leadership in delivering humanized and quality care to the Person in Critical Condition, always respecting ethical and legal principles. It reinforces the role of the specialist nurse in promoting safe, person-centered care through the continuous development of their competencies.
