Abstract

The achievement of skills in assisting the critically ill patient" is the master's report made under the Master in Nursing with specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa of Porto. This work relates to three training modules, implementing 750 total hours which were allocated by the Emergency Service (Module I) and Service of Intensive Care Medicine (Module II) of the Hospital Pedro Hispano and finally the Infection Hospital Control Committee the Centro Hospitalar do Tâmega e Sousa (Module III) .The purpose of this report is to describe and to analyse, based on critical reflection, the path made for the acquisition of skills as future nurse specialist. Hospital risk management was determined as common subject to all modules of this trainning. Through this, enter the clinical and not clinical risk management in various areas of jurisdiction necessary to a Nurse Specialist in Medical-Surgical Nursing: care, management, training and research. Relatively to care delivery, I focused on prevention and infection control, communication with the patient and the family, ethical and deontological aspects associated and patient safety / professional. In the area of management I kept the focus on the management related to patient safety encompassing the management of human and material resources and also communication in multidispilinar environment. The training was developed based on identified training needs and inserted the themes worked in other areas of competence mentioned. The investigation was an continuous ally in this process, offering me a solid basis for the activities carried out in other areas of competence. Through this journey I could improve the scientific knowledge acquired in the academic phase but also develop technical and relational knowledge and communication skills so necessary to provide differentiated quality of care to critically ill patients.
