Abstract

The relationship between children and television is a current discussion in common society as well as in the academic spheres due to the great popularity of the medium in the family. The advent of pay television not only increased the offer, but brought with it themed channels, aimed to specific publics. Children, like any other public, have, mostly because of their vulnerability and susceptibility, the right to a specific, not exploitive, programming destined to stimulate their development and fit to their needs. Considering these assumptions and, in the ambit of the Masters in Communication, specialization in Communication, Organizations and New Technologies, the present study aims to analyze the child designed thematic televised offer, included in the pay television service, as well as identify the family, household and TV consumption components. Therefore a case study was made concerning two channels: Canal Panda and Disney Channel. Matching it with the data gathered through inquiries made to households with pre-school and primary grade aged children. This dissertation intent is to broaden the knowledge around this subject, enlarging the national studies published so far, contemplating strictly the open signal television. Its further ambitions are to create a solid basis, which will allow the conclusions of such studies to be extrapolated onto pay television services through the suggestion of alternative methodological choices which can confirm or contradict the assumptions gotten up to this point.
