Abstract

In language teaching, it is important to reinforce cultural education in classes for students from the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR), at level A1. The purpose of learning a language is to communicate with other people. In addition to teaching the language, the role of teachers involves stimulating students' critical ability, for example, students and the teacher discussing a certain topic in class. The objective will be for students to learn to cooperate with others and improve their communication skills. In my report, I intend to demonstrate the potential of culture and its teaching in PLE/LS classes. I intend to integrate culture into classes and create a more innovative learning environment, allowing students to come into contact with new cultures and have the ability to make comparisons between Chinese culture and Portuguese culture. I believe that cultural competence is important for Macau students. In this region, there is no longer a cultural environment that facilitates learning the Portuguese language; Therefore, cultural competence makes the class more diverse and gives students a better ability to communicate in real life. For level A1, there are cultural themes that can be covered in class, in order to contribute to the development of students' communicative skills. My teaching proposals aim to work with various cultural topics that seem relevant to an A1 level (for example, music, food, customs, sport, some figures from history and literature). Each proposal will attempt to combine culture with language, in order to facilitate and motivate students to learn the language, whilst also promoting their reflective capacity and critical spirit.
