The need for help in order to take forth the normal self care activities challenges individuals to introduce significant changes in the way they perceive their health issues. The study here described has as subject the phenomenon of “Self-care Dependence”. We set out to ascertain the extent of the phenomenon of dependence in self care, within the classical families residing in the municipality of Oporto, to characterize the dependent individuals and assess their type and level of dependency. The study here presented is part of a quantitative research, with an exploratory and descriptive type. In data collection was used the interview technique, based on a form; was used a “door to door” approach, in a probabilistic and stratified sample, depending on the relative weight of each parish of the municipality in the total universe of families of Oporto. The assessment of dependency on multiple domains of self-care was held on the basis of an instrument witch incorporates various scales. This instrument has proved, like in previous studies, to be highly reliable and accurate. In a sample of two thousand and three hundred and fourteen (2314) families, were identified two hundred and forty-one (241) cases witch, in the opinion of the respondents showed some level of dependency on self-care; what allowed us to say that the percentage of families of the Oporto that integrate dependants in their midst is 10,41%. Of these cases, one hundred and fifty-seven (157) families agreed to participate in specific evaluation of the type and level of dependency. The dependents in self-care are mostly women, elderly and widowed. It was found that in most cases (70,3%), the installation of dependency was settled gradually, being its main cause ageing (17,2%). With regard to the evaluation of the level of dependence, it was found that in virtually all studied areas of self-care, more than 50% of the cases rely on people or are completely dependent. Still, it was found that about 30% of the cases can be categorized has “bedridden”, to the extent that they are persons with significant levels of dependency on the areas of self-care “Rise”, “ Moving” and “”Turn around”, i.e. people who, without the help of another person, are unable to get out of bed, by its own means.
