Abstract

Depression is a mood disorder characterized by a set of symptoms that include sadness and / or decreasing interest in performing tasks. Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is characterized by clinical problems of joint and orofacial muscles in the area, its etiology is multifactorial, their main complaint is pain. The pain has a scope psychophysiological, so an assessment of factors such as depression becomes crucial. This study aims to find a relationship between these two pathologies: the TMD and depression. 84 patients were chosen randomly in the Dental University Clinic from the Portuguese Catholic University – Viseu, and submitted to following surveys: RDC/TMD Index (“Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular disorders”) and SCL – 90 R Index. Of the 84 patients, 42 have depression and 51 have orofacial pain. This study did not find a statistically significant correlation (P <0.05) between depression and TMD, however it was found between diagnosis of TMD and orofacial pain and the presence of association between patient gender and diagnosis of depression.
