Introduction: Dental caries is the chronic disease with the highest incidence in the world, being considered a multifactorial pathology associated with the bacterial microbiota adhered to the tooth surface. Silver diamine fluoride has emerged as an important option for the control of dental caries, due to its safety, efficiency and feasibility. The aim of this systematic review was to carry out a qualitative assessment of SDF in dental caries in children. Materials and Methods: This review was developed following the PRISMA guidelines using the following PICO question: “How effective is SDF in preventing and stabilizing caries lesions in a pediatric population when compared to other dental materials?” A search was performed in the PubMed/MEDLINE®, Web of Science, Embase and Scopus; without time limits and in English and Portuguese. The quality of the studies was evaluated using the Rob 2 tool. Results: The literature search resulted in 1611 studies. After selection and removal of duplicates, 13 studies were included in this review. The results obtained consider that the use of SDF is useful in the prevention and stabilization of caries and can be considered an important agent in the control of caries in school-age children. Conclusion: This review considers, based on the studies included, that the use of SDF is useful in preventing and stabilizing caries; although studies differ in methodology and quality of evidence presented.
