Abstract

This report is part of the Curricular Unit "Final Internship and Report," integrated into the 14th Master's Degree Course with a specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of Nursing in Critical Care, of the Institute of Health Sciences of the Portuguese Catholic University of Lisbon and its main objective is to reflect the entire training process, as a competitor for the development and improvement of the skills required for the degree of Master in Nursing and Specialist in the area of Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing. This document, supported by a descriptive and critical-reflective methodology, is intended to demonstrate my personal and professional journey, by describing and reflecting on the experiences and how these were important for the acquisition of skills in the area of Nursing specialisation in the care of the Critically Ill. This journey was carried out in the context of the Emergency Operating Room and the Multipurpose Intensive Care Unit. Throughout the report, I will briefly describe the internship settings; reflect on my learning process in relation to the situations I experienced; identify the skills I acquired in the area of specialization; frame the research topic that I considered essential to develop and make an overall assessment of the journey undertaken, as well as the implications it had for my current professional practice. During this learning process, I had the opportunity to develop skills in the approach to the person who is unstable or at risk of organ failure; to promote a practice allied to scientific knowledge; to promote strategies for infection control and resistance to microorganisms, as well as an ethical and deontological professional practice, always taking into account good communication, a strong therapeutic relationship developed with the person in critical condition and his/her family. This formative journey also includes the development of a research study, which is the focus of this report, and is subsidiary to the development of master's competencies, entitled - Strategies for health professionals' adherence to the recommendations for prevention of intravascular device-associated infection: Scoping Review.
