Abstract

The flow of foreign direct investment (FDI) is nowadays a significant part of capital flows between countries. This kind of investment is characterized by being productivity increasing giving safeguard against speculation and therefore providing a competitive edge for the investing country and an internationalizing factor for the respective country’s Industries. By studying FDI we are able to understand the differentiation factors of the countries where the investment is directed. The main target of the analysis in this context is Brazil and its ability to capture Portuguese FDI. In the moment of their expansion abroad some Portuguese Based Industries make use of Models in order to better understand and make decisions regarding the best way to enter and operate in a new market. Our goal in this Endeavour is not only to provide analysis on the processes used by Portuguese corporations when expanding into the Brazilian market, making use of models such as The Uppsala internationalization process model and of the eclectic paradigm model amongst others, but also to provide an insight on the FDI made by the these corporations on Brazilian soil. We will also study their concrete motivations and the modus operandi when entering a new market taking into account the “psychic distance” (CAGE) between countries of origin. By researching and analyzing available databases and bibliographies we were able to complete a report on the Portuguese base Industries operating on Brazilian soil and their respective FDI.
