Abstract

This report aims to provide a retrospective analysis on the journey of skills acquisition and development as part of a Master's Degree in Nursing, with a specialization in Child Health and Paediatrics, focusing on a key issue that concerns the fostering of hope in adolescents while in nursing care, with a particular emphasis on communication as a therapeutic instrument. Based on a conceptual framework, guided by the assumptions and intervention principles of two theoretical perspectives, these being Unitary Caring Science and the Intervention Model in Hope Fostering Mutual Aid. In order to outline the existing scientific evidence on the topic, a scoping review was conducted on the key issue of hope in adolescents during nursing care. This scoping review was of utmost importance throughout the entire process, to the extent that its results became the scientific basis for the validation of evidence in the context of providing care. Among its main findings, we highlight the dynamic nature associated with the concept of adolescent hope, thus resulting in a constant need for its fostering and preservation, as well as the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Nurses, due to their extended contact with the adolescent patient and the relationships developed throughout said contact, can contribute to the adolescent's sense of hope, and should use communication as a therapeutic tool. The methodology applied to the project covered all contexts, hence I identified the following as the overall objective of the whole process: To acquire and develop scientific, technical, ethical, and interpersonal skills as a Nurse Specialist in Child Health and Paediatrics, regarding the nursing care provided to children and/or adolescents and their families, with a focus on hope-fostering communication. Among the activities carried out, I would like to highlight some analysis of the importance of using hope fostering communication with overweight/obese adolescents, which resulted in the creation of a possible interview script; focus group sessions, with the subsequent creation and circulation of a chart; as well as the creation of a proposed handbook concerning the creation of a hope box.
