Abstract

The present study aimed to explore the reduction of suffering levels in schizophrenia at the existence of empowerment, considering that empowerment is characterized by the main psychological dimensions (such as autonomy, independency, auto determination, effectiveness, and competence) developed through the processes of psychosocial rehabilitation. The study‘s sample is composed by 50 institutionalized individuals, all diagnosed with schizophrenia, divided in two groups of 25 schizophrenia patients, being one of the groups composed by chronic patients and the other group rehabilitation patients. The study variables were the socio-demographics that characterized the study‘s population, as dependent variable was considered the suffering level measured by Prism. For the study‘s execution was necessary to use the non-verbal/visual measurement method - PRISM (Buchi et al., 2002) as evaluation method of suffering levels, together with the Barthel scale (Mahoney & Barthel, 1965 Araújo and collaborators Portuguese version, 2007) and Monumental State Examination – MMSE (Folstein, Folstein & McHugh (1975) adapted to Portuguese Population by Guerreiro and collaborators, (1994)) as study inclusion measures. The results show no significant statistical differences for the suffering levels between patients with higher or lower empowerment (with or without rehabilitation). These results also reveals that independently the intervention type, the sample has potential suffering indicators. The study explores that the suffering levels in schizophrenia-diagnosed patients is an important factor for the patient‘s comprehension and psychological intervention development.
