Abstract

I have always seen training in Nursing as promoting the personal and professional growth of all nurses. It was in this context that I enrolled in the Masters Degree in Nursing, with specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, namely at the Instituto de Ciências da Saúde of Porto. The choice of medical-surgical specialty was due to the fact that, until the date of enrollment in the course, I had twelve years of professional experience in assisting adults and elderly persons with severe diseases and critical conditions. The Masters course, with specialization in Medical- Surgical Nursing was thus an answer to my need for evolution in this process of continuous development, that will give me skills to provide specialized nursing care in this area of training, with quality, and tailored to the needs of the target population. The curriculum of the Masters Course includes multiple curricular units, divided into two distinct periods, the first fundamentally theoretic, and the second with a more practical character, which includes the curricular unit Internship. I carried out two training modules, the first of which began in the Emergency Department of the Hospital Pedro Hispano, and the second in the Department of Intensive Care Medicine in the same health institution. To serve as a guideline, an Internship Project was drafted, defining the general / specific objectives and activities to be developed, so as to acquire the necessary skills at the end of this clinical learning. The Portfolios were the documents where the execution and evolution, regarding the two training modules, was recorded, and where I was able to describe the rich experiences and the strategies chosen to solve identified problem situations. By preparing this report, I intend to make an especially critical and reflective analysis regarding all the situations experienced along this road, according to a perspective of Advanced Nursing, which allowed me and will allow me to take informed decisions based on scientific evidence, never forgetting my professional, ethic and legal responsibility.
