Abstract

This project report aims essentially to show that through architecture it is possible to contribute to the reversal of the decay and isolation of the historic centre. It is a fact that the majority of the historic centres are gradually withering and Viseu is not an exception. In these centres, the residential population has not self-renewed and it is urgent to find an explanation to this phenomenon. This is somewhat complex, since countless variables would have to be analysed, thus implying a multidisciplinary study (architectural, social, economic, political, etc.) The execution of this project focused on the creation of innovative and pleasant architectural spaces which will meet the needs of younger population, hence contributing to its fixation in the old part of town, and therefore helping the renewal of its residential population. Being this a project intended for young people, the housing and spatial concepts, namely the public and private space, were developed having in mind the target population, using building materials that are more economical, long-lasting and aesthetically adjusted to its surroundings. The creation of these new spaces will be the motto to entice and attract new residents to the older part of town, consequently reinvigorating the historic centre of Viseu.
