This report, carried out during this master degree in nursing specialization medical and surgical nursing, reflects a path taken during the stage that focused on providing care to the critical patient, based always on technical and scientific aspects, as well as human and spiritual aspects. This stage took place between may 2, 2016 and january 13, 2017, with module I in the emergency department of a central hospital in the northern zone, module II in intensive care of a local health unit, and module III, optional, in the infection control commission of the same local health unit. In this context, the humanization of care is thus a challenge for health professionals, specifically for nurses, being close to patients, in order to transpose holistic patient care into their practice, acknowledging their bio-psycho-social-cultural and spiritual dimension, aiming the excellence of care, considering the fundamental rights of the human being, with respect for their dignity and individuality. The development of skills in critical care has focused on the provision of care in the field of training, management and research, from a broader perspective, in line with the expertise of the specialist nurse, specifically in the context of Intensive Care and Urgency. Caring for the patient in a critical context represented a significant part of the whole journey, where technical, scientific, human and relational skills could be integrated, where case studies and moments of reflection based on bibliographic research represented important moments of learning. Care was given to the adult patient with one or more organic failures, needs diagnosed and interventions implemented based on the patient's overall view, communication with the critical patient, communication with the family and development of strategies in the face of problems encountered. In the scope of training, the training action on "Spirituality in Nursing Care" was emphasized, which contributed to the realization that care for the patient is not limited to the technician but presupposes the holistic dimension of the person, where the spiritual, which is not always taken into account in the care plan. The field of management comprised the management of care, dynamics and methodology used, and the field of research focused on translating research results that helped to inform and improve care delivery through the use of bibliographical research and other acquired knowledge. The development of competencies in infection control encompassed epidemiological surveillance, visits and audits, training and information, and quality improvement. Specific objectives and activities that contributed to the acquisition of skills in the control of health care associated infections were defined, with regard to the implementation of quality improvement strategies, based on the fulfillment of good practices, also reflecting excellence of care. In response to a need found, a week / flu event was developed to inform and educate the public and health professionals about seasonal flu prevention measures. It was concluded that the humanization of care comprehends the global needs of the patient, valuing a comprehensive nursing care response that considers the physical needs linked to the psychological, social and spiritual suffering existing in the condition of being sick that is beyond the treatment of pathology
