Abstract

In recent years, with the promotion and support of the Macau government, the number of primary and secondary schools teaching Portuguese has increased significantly.Despite the great efforts made by the government for the promotion of Portuguese, there is no effective and demanding program to guarantee the quality of the teaching and learning of this language within the classroom, especially regarding the students'communicative competence.This paper aims to develop an understanding of the current situation regarding the teaching of Portuguese as a Second language / Foreign language in secondary schools in Macau, with the intention of exploring the presence of strategies aimed at the development of communicative competence in the classroom. Furthermore, this study seeks to explore the relevance and possibility of adopting a Communicative Approach in teaching Portuguese as a Second language / Foreign language with Chinese learners,based on a theoretical review of the Communicative Approach and a qualitative analysis of the lessons observed and taught in 7th grade classes at the school Escola dos Moradores de Macau. This study allowed us to conclude that learning and teaching of Portuguese as a Portuguese as a Second language / Foreign language are affected by a number of factors, including teachers' roles, traditional Chinese learning and teaching methods, and the exam-oriented model. As a result, the study explores some of the obstacles affecting the implementation of a Communicative Approach to Portuguese language teaching and learning in secondary schools in Macau, with a view to identifying ways to improve the teaching of the Portuguese language curriculum, noting, among other things, the need for the government and school authorities to work closely with teachers, ensuring that professional development opportunities are provided, and the development of communicative resources/materials to ensure effective Portuguese language teaching in schools.
