This investigation aims at analysing the results of the group teaching practice in the violin class at the “Centro de Cultura Musical” (CCM). In 1995, the democratization of the specialized artistic education encountered budget cuts that led to the implementation of group instrumental lessons along the 2nd cycle of studies in the piano, winds and strings areas, in order to maximize the human resources and to provide musical education to the largest possible number of students. The use of this methodology was born from the knowledge of the teaching group projects developed in the Arizona State University (ASU). The main goal of this research is verifying the students’ level of preparation after two years of group lessons, the advantages and disadvantages of group teaching and the consequent growth of the violin class. For the data collection, the CCM and ARTAVE computer files were examined and analysed and two different types of survey were used: 62 questionnaires to violin students from 5th to 6th year of the CCM, 6 questionnaires to CCM violin teachers and 5 to ARTAVE teachers and an interview to the CCM Pedagogical Director. The results of this study show that the group teaching implemented in the CCM has led to the development of an instrumental class prepared and motivated to continue their studies, even though some amendments are suggested. The collected data also proved the contribution of this institution to the artistic education democratization. The conclusions of this investigation bring up information that may be relevant to all music schools and teachers interested in exploring this subject.
