Abstract

Introduction: Teeth’s arrangement in complete dentures is a complex process that should ensure functional an aesthetics competences to the patient. The placement of the superior central incisor has great importance. Therefore it is imperative to use a stable and immobile anatomic landmark, as the incisive papilla, that allows a correct prosthetic teeth’s arrangement. Objectives: Analyse the anatomic relationship between incisive papilla and superior central incisor, superior canines, arch form and facial midline in University Catholics of Portugal’s patients rehabilitated with complete dentures. Determine if there are significate differences between these relationships and the dentulous/edentulous state, gender and number of years of complete denture use. Material and methods: 35 patients with superior complete dentures and 35 patients with natural dentition from university clinic were observed and divided in study group and control group, respectively. Personal data and results from measurements of horizontal and vertical distances between superior central incisor and incisive papilla, vertical distance from canine to incisive papilla, intercanine distance, relationship between intercanine line and incisive papilla, arch form and coincidence of incisive papilla with facial midline were recorded. Results: There was a relationship between horizontal and vertical distances between incisive papilla and superior central incisor and canine, and between intecanine line distance and the two groups. In dentate group there was a relation between genders and intercanine distance. Vertical distance from superior central incisor and intercanine distance were influenced by arch shape. There is a strong relationship between group and incisive papilla shape. Conclusion: We can conclude that’s important to standardize measure points and methods and reference plane used so that way this measurements could be used as guidelines to teeth’s arrangement in complete dentures.
