Abstract

Sleep is a state of consciousness, it can be defined as a function of the human organism that complement the waking state. There are many sleep disorders that may beassociated chronic pain, psychological and psychiatric disorders, mood swings and depressive states, stress.The TMD is a group of diseases that affect large populations. Its etiology ismultifactorial, but their complaints by patients are multiple complicating diagnosis. TheTMD can affect both muscles and temporomandibular joint of the stomatognathic system.This pilot study aims to find a relationship between these two pathologies: the TMDand sleep pathology. 40 patients were chosen randomly in the Dental University Clinic from the Portuguese Catholic University – Viseu, and submitted to following surveys: RDC/TMD Index (“Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular disorders”) axis I and II and Pittsburgh sleep Quality Index.
