Abstract

More and more people are travelling, crossing borders either for mere pleasure or for work. This makes it for more languages and cultures to be connected. Because food is a fundamental part of culture, we also have to see the links being fortified with food, language and travel. Food is captured through the senses but it is through the language that we can imagine it. Regarding the dishes names, they usually remain on the language of the local culture considering that it brings the exotism from one language and culture,
from what is different.
The following project is about the translation from English to Portuguese of a
report made by the World Tourism Organization (WTO) and it analyses the current state of food tourism.
The question that sets the project is how to translate a word or expression in the
field of food and, namely, which is the peculiarity and the translation role of tourism sector, especially about food tourism. Considering gastronomy one of the culture elements, in which way and how does culture is reflected on the language that introduces and describes the culinary of a place?
We will try to answer this question through the execution of a translation project
on a food report. This involves a first phase of framing of the investigation in Translation Studies. A second phase, regarding the translation of the report. A third phase, concerning deep thinking on the translation process through the exemplification of some difficulties found in texts of the same kind.
The objective of this project is to show the importance of culture in food
translation. We must remember it is a cultural translation and the need of some expertise in this field.
