In a society of many contradictions regarding the value of consumer goods, interpersonal relationships, and even people, one must consider the significance of caring for individuals facing disability. There has been a historical change in the acceptance and care for these individuals: from an attitude of exclusion to one of passive acceptance; and today, efforts towards social inclusion are being developed. This inclusion comprises both workplace and school environments. The school insertion model may be questionable, but the school’s adaptation to pupils with special educational needs should be considered essencial, regarding social insertion autonomy and fullest personal fulfillment. Among the numerous factors or causes of disability, fetal alcohol syndrome is evident and well defined. The author characterizes the social, cultural, psychological and somatic context of this cause for disability; she theoretically contextualizes the issue of disability; she assesses the role of school inclusion and personal autonomy in social insertion; and she analyses a paradigmatic case of inclusion of an intelectually-disabled adolescent, backed up by the union of the school’s efforts and the cooperation of an institution specialized in learning and job placement.
