The studies concerning the influence of physiological synchrony have been capturing the interest of researchers. Physiological synchrony is now identified in the literature as a promoter of cooperation and competition, which in turn can impact the relationship of couples. The objective of this study focus on understanding if there are differences between the physiological synchrony in the accomplishment of cooperative and competitive tasks, and if there is an association between it and marital satisfaction. The sample of this study is composed of six couples (N = 12), who performed a dyadic interaction experiment consisting of several tasks that impelled the competition and the cooperation between the couple. During the tasks the heart rate of each participant was continuously recorded in order to analyze the physiological synchrony. In parallel, each element of the dyad completed a self-report questionnaire that assesses marital satisfaction. In this study we found differences between the physiological synchrony and the competitive tasks. There was no association between synchrony and marital satisfaction. These results do not corroborate the studies carried out so far. The practical and methodological implications that may explain the results are discussed. Limitations of the study as well as directions for future investigations are presented
